Wuhan R3: Venus Williams vs (7) Carla Suarez Navarro
Venus Williams and Carla Suarez Navarro will renew hostilities on Wednesday when they go head-to-head in the third round at the Wuhan Open. Venus Williams has been impressive on route to the third round with two commanding straight set victories whilst Carla Suarez Navarro stumbled into the third round and will need a much better performance if she is to trouble the American.
Despite her recent poor form, including a run of 8 consecutive losses, Carla Suarez Navarro still remains a chance to qualify for her first WTA Finals campaign, she is currently ranked 8th in the race to Singapore standings. Suarez Navarro broke a long string of losses last week in Tokyo when she defeated Kateryna Bondarenko but she would succumb to Dominika Cibulkova in the next round. The Spaniard received a bye into the second round in Wuhan before defeating 5-7 6-3 6-4 in an extremely hard-fought encounter. Suarez Navarro looked extremely fatigued throughout the match but fought gallantly to advance to the next round and set up a clash with Venus Williams.
Venus Williams has started her Asian campaign in style, recording straight set victories over Agnieszka Radwanska and Julia Goerges to advance to the third round in Wuhan. The American’s 6-1 7-6 victory over Tokyo champion Agnieszka Radwanska was quite impressive, Venus rocketed 51 winners past the Pole in a commanding performance. Venus backed up that victory with a 6-4 6-3 victory over Julia Goerges, serving exceptionally well to always stay in control. The American’s second round victory over Goerges was her 700th career victory, a major milestone.
Carla Suarez Navarro holds a 3-2 head-to-head record over Venus Williams, the two have traded victories over their 5 previous encounters. The most recent encounter between the pair took place in Montreal last year, Carla made a miraculous recovery to record a 0-6 6-1 7-5 victory over Venus Williams.
I suspect Venus Williams will be too strong for Carla on this occasion, the Spaniard is still lacking confidence and seemed to really be struggling physically throughout her second round win over Niculescu. Whilst Venus has looked very confident this week and should be too powerful for the Spaniard.
