Venus Williams vs Elena Vesnina, Indian Wells QF Preview

BNP Paribas Open, ??? Indian Wells, QF #4 Match Preview
(12) ?? Venus Williams vs (14) ?? Elena Vesnina

The fourth and final quarter-final at the BNP Paribas Open features an unlikely match-up when Venus Williams come up against Elena Vesnina. What’s surprising heading into this clash is that Vesnina has a positive head-to-head recover over the American, Vesnina has won 3 of their 5 previous matches, including a memorable three set win over Williams in Miami last year. Venus will be desperate to reverse that record and will likely raise to the occasion at the business end of the tournament as she has often done in recent times.

Venus Williams was down and out in her opening match in Indian Wells, Venus trailed Jelena Jankovic by 1-6 1-4 and was seemingly not capable of fighting back. However, Jankovic’s level deteriorated and Venus ended up running away with the match in the deciding set, saving a few match points to win 1-6 7-6 6-1. Venus kept her positive momentum going in the next round as she eased past Lucie Safarova in straight sets. Venus confirmed her spot in the final 8 with another comeback win, a 3-6 6-1 6-3 win over Shuai Peng. Venus keeps finding a way to win in 2017, a remarkable trend for the 36-year-old.

Elena Vesnina has navigated her way past three difficult opponents to reach the quarter-final stage of the BNP Paribas Open for the first time in her career. Vesnina opened her run to the final 8 with a tight two set win over Shelby Rogers before just sneaking past Timea Babos 6-4 1-6 6-4. Vesnina’s most impressive result was in the round of 16 where she upset the top ranked Angelique Kerber in emphatic fashion, recording a 6-3 6-3 win.

Elena Vesnina holds a 3-2 head-to-head record over Venus Williams. Their most recent match ended in a 6-0 6-7 6-2 win for Vesnina in Miami last year. Prior to that, Venus won consecutive straight set matches over Vesnina on a hard court.

I will give the slight edge to Venus here, mainly because of her experience at this level which seems to be getting her through so many big matches in recent times. Venus always raises her level for matches like this whilst Vesnina’s way of dealing with the occasion is unknown. I don’t think the surface particularly suits either player but the high bouncing courts may assist the Venus Williams serve which could be the deciding factor. It will be tough for Vesnina to rebound from arguably the biggest win of her career.

Prediction: Venus Williams to defeat Elena Vesnina in 3 sets
