Venus Williams vs Jelena Ostapenko, Wimbledon QF Preview

Wimbledon?????? Quarter-Final Match Preview:
QF #3: (10) ?? Venus Williams vs (13) ?? Jelena Ostapenko

A Blockbuster quarter-final clash at Wimbledon sees 5-time Wimbledon champion Venus Williams come up against reigning Roland Garros champion Jelena Ostapenko. This will be the first career meeting between Williams and Ostapenko, experience is on the American’s side. Venus is 17 years Jelena’s senior and has been at this stage far more often, however it is Ostapenko who is the form player on tour right now and continues to play fearless tennis no matter the situation. It will be interesting to see how Ostapenko matches up against Venus, this should be an extremely close encounter between two seemingly evenly matches competitors.

Venus Williams now has the greatest opportunity in a while to win a Grand Slam title. It has been almost 10 years since Venus won her last Grand Slam, way back in 2008 at Wimbledon. All these years later, after all Venus has gone through on and off the court it will be a monumental achievement if Venus were to again emerge victorious at SW19. It has been a tough event for Venus but her champion qualities have been on display. Venus started with a tough straight set win over Elise Mertens before coming from a set down to defeat Qiang Wang. Venus went on to beat Naomi Osaka 7-6 6-4 and Ana Konjuh 6-3 6-2. Interestingly, Venus is playing well against big hitters, great preparation for her next match against Ostapenko.

Jelena Ostapenko’s run to the quarter-finals at Wimbledon have shown an outstanding level of maturity. Ostapenko stunned the tennis world by winning the title at Roland Garros, the Latvian would have been excused if she had a big let-down after such a big achievement. Instead, Ostapenko has been straight back at it, blasting her way into the final eight at SW19. Ostapenko started the event in scratchy fashion, requiring three sets to get past Aliaksandra Sasnovich and Francoise Abanda. Since then Ostapenko has improved, beating Camila Giorgi 7-5 7-5 and finally eliminating the fourth seeded Elina Svitolina with a 6-3 7-6 win. Ostapenko’s bravery under extreme pressure has been the hallmark of her recent success, something she will need to continue moving forward.

I’m going to give Venus Williams the edge here. Venus has shown that she can handle power hitters with straight set wins over Osaka and Konjuh, Ostapenko will clearly present a greater challenge but Venus has the maturity and experience to realize what she needs to do when she comes under fire from Ostapenko. The Latvian is still a bit too inconsistent throughout matches and Venus will be good enough to take advantage of this. I expect the more experienced and consistent Venus to come through this one. Ostapenko’s run must eventually come to an end.
