Venus Williams vs Johanna Konta, Miami SF Preview

Miami Open, ???? SF Match Preview
(11) ?? Venus Williams vs (10) ?? Johnna Konta

Venus Williams and Johanna Konta will go head-to-head in the second semi-final of the day at the Miami Open in what promises to be an extremely tight contest between two very evenly matched opponents. Venus Williams is having an amazing season, especially considering she is often the oldest player in these big events. Johanna Konta is also in great form and will enter this match with a heap of confidence given she defeated Venus in their two previous matches.

Venus Williams has breezed through to the semi-finals at the Miami Open without dropping a set. It has been a reasonably tough draw for Venus, her first two matches over Beatriz Maria Haddad and Maria Patricia Tig were straight forward wins. Venus claimed two very impressive wins over two extremely tough opponents to advance to the semi-final, starting with a 6-3 7-6 win over Svetlana Kuznetsova and a 7-5 6-3 win over Angelique Kerber. Venus has looked very sharp this week, venturing to the net whenever possible and having very good success with that tactic.

Johanna Konta’s form tailed off after the Australian summer, the Brit sustained an injury during Fed Cup action and was forced out of the Middle Eastern Swing. After an early round exit in Indian Wells, Konta has rebounded strongly in Miami by making the semi-finals. Konta has not necessarily been at her best in Miami but she has been competing very well, Konta started the week with a scrappy three set win over Aliaksandra Sasnovich before beating Pauline Parmentier and Lara Arruabarrena in straight sets. Konta’s most impressive win of the tournament came in the quarter-finals when she came from a set down to defeat Simona Halep 3-6 7-6 6-2.

Johanna Konta holds a 2-1 head-to-head record over Venus Williams, the Brit has won the two most recent matches between the pair. The pair met on two occasions in 2017, Konta won both of those matches, a surprise 6-4 6-2 win at the Australian Open before backing up that victory with a 7-5 5-7 6-2 win in the Stanford final.

This should be a close match, this is a rare match-up on the WTA tour where breaks of serve are likely to be a rarity and could be decisive in a set. I think Konta will come through this match. The surface in Miami is slightly slow for a hard court and doesn’t really suit either player (though it has helped the Venus serve), therefore there are likely to be more extended rallies which could favour Konta who has the superior fitness. Konta’s second serve is also stronger and more likely to stand up under pressure which should be a big factor in this match-up.

Prediction: Johanna Konta to defeat Venus Williams in 3 sets
