Venus Williams vs Mona Barthel, Australian Open R4 Preview

Australian Open, ??? Fourth Round Match Preview
(13) ?? Venus Williams vs ?? Mona Barthel

Venus Williams continues to defy all odds, remaining extremely competitive at the biggest tournaments at the age of 36. Venus Williams is the most experienced player on tour, having competed in more Grand Slam events than anyone in the open era, Venus certainly makes the most of that vast experience. The American will come up against Mona Barthel at the fourth round stage on Sunday. Venus has been blessed with a very favourable draw at the first Grand Slam of the year, Venus will be keen to take full advantage and advance to the quarter-final stage.

Venus Williams is yet to drop a set at Melbourne Park through her first three matches of the tournament. The American faced her toughest test in the first round where she was forced to dig deep to claim a 7-6 7-5 win over Kateryna Kozlova. Venus was totally untroubled in her next two matches, dropping a combined six games in wins over Stefanie Voegele and Ying-Ying Duan. Venus has an opportunity to reach the quarter-finals in Melbourne without playing an opponent ranked inside the top 80, an unbelievably lucky break for the veteran.

Mona Barthel is having a fantastic time in Melbourne after an extremely tough couple of seasons which were interrupted by injury and illness. Barthel has now won a total of 6 matches having entered the main draw through qualifying, Barthel won the first five matches in straight sets. Barthel started her main draw run with a 6-3 7-6 win over Destanee Aiava before eliminating the 29th seeded Monica Puig 6-4 6-4. Barthel secured her spot in the second week of a Grand Slam for the very first time when she defeated Ash Barty 6-4 3-6 6-3. Barthel did well to come from a break down in the final set, ending the match as the solid player.

Venus Williams has won both of the previous matches between the pair, both in straight sets. The most recent match between the pair was back in 2013 in Tokyo where Venus was triumphant 6-3 6-1. I expect Venus to record a similarly comfortable win when the pair go head to head for a spot in the quarter-finals in Melbourne.

Mona Barthel has already played six matches in Melbourne, the German is not used to playing this much tennis in a short period of time. Barthel mentioned that she was feeling tired during her third round match, a bad sign heading into such a big match. Venus Williams is fresh and sharp, playing solid tennis at the moment. Barthel doesn’t really have the style that troubles Venus, the German is solid but Venus will be able to dictate and should be quite comfortable in this match-up.

Prediction: Venus Williams to defeat Mona Barthel in 2 sets
