Venus Williams vs Petra Kvitova, U.S Open QF Preview

US Open, ????? QF Preview + Prediction:
(9) ?? Venus Williams vs (13) ?? Petra Kvitova

A blockbuster quarter-final from Flushing Meadows on Tuesday sees Venus Williams take on Petra Kvitova. At the age of 37, Venus Williams has been the most consistent performer at the Grand Slam level in 2017 having already made it to the final at the Australian Open and Wimbledon as well as a fourth round appearance at Roland Garros.

Petra Kvitova is in the midst of her own special season. After being attacked in the off season and spending half the year on the side-lines, it is incredible to see Kvitova playing so well as she has reached the quarter-final stage at the U.S Open for just the second time in her career. This is going to be an exciting contest between two of the move loved and respected players on tour, Kvitova holds a 4-1 edge in the head-to-head but Venus Williams has been superb at the later stage of Grand Slam events this year and fancy her chances here.

Venus Williams has displayed her incredible longevity throughout 2017 and now has her third major chance to win her first Grand Slam title since Wimbledon 2008. Again it must be said that Venus has had a fairly favourable draw but again she has taken advantage of it. Venus started the event with a surprisingly tough three set win over Viktoria Kuzmova. After that, Venus fended off Oceane Dodin and Maria Sakkari in straight sets. The 9th seed’s toughest test came at the fourth round stage where she saved her best tennis of the tournament for the deciding set to beat Carla Suarez Navarro 6-3 3-6 6-1. Venus is super determined to win that elusive Grand Slam title in 2017, she now has one last chance in New York.

Petra Kvitova has stormed into the quarter-finals in New York without dropping a set, a very impressive effort given her poor form heading into the event. Kvitova’s route to the final 8 has been a tough a one. Petra started the event with a 7-5 7-5 win over Jelena Jankovic before thrashing Alize Cornet 6-1 6-2. Kvitova has stepped up her level in the last couple of matches, starting with a 6-0 6-4 win over Caroline Garcia and then her most impressive result of the tournament as she eliminated the third seeded Garbine Muguruza 7-6 6-3. Kvitova’s run to the quarter-finals in New York is already one of the feel good stories of the year, Petra has nothing to lose now and is always extremely dangerous this late in a major.

Petra Kvitova holds a 4-1 head-to-head record over Venus Williams, Petra has won the last three matches between the pair, including an epic 5-7 7-6 7-5 win at Wimbledon in 2014 in what was their most recent encounter. It has been over three years since this these two have come face-to-face, it will be interesting to see how this match pans out.

I’m going to give the edge to the evergreen Venus Williams here. I think Venus is mentally tougher and is the more match hardened heading into this match, especially in big matches. Venus has been so consistent this year and whilst Petra has been playing well this week it feels like a bad performance is just around the corner for Petra. Venus is so determined right now and she know how to deal with big hitters, she has shown this over and over again throughout 2017. I’d say Venus will be tougher when it matters most and sneak through this one with her greater consistency.

Prediction: Venus Williams to defeat Petra Kvitova in 3 sets

  1. What do u mean its good kvitova won, Venus could get a freebie?? Why a freebie?
And I reckon Querrey will win not Anderson

      • wtaaddictcom, why do you rate Anderson higher than Querrey?

Why do you think Anderson will win over Querrey today? Querry has the home advantage.

All home dogs like Madison Keys,Sloane,Venus etc. are winning, right? Then why not another home dog Querry? Querry is also playing well. Did he not smash Mischa a good hard courter 6-2,6-2,6-1 unlike Anderson who went to 4 sets with Paolo Lorenzi a clay courter?

        • I just don’t trust Querrey. It seems like the type of match he would lose. The truth is that it is so even. I just think Anderson’s base level is higher

    • Pieman, I think the bookies (in collaboration with hackers) hacked as this website was bringing bettors together and helping people make money by allowing bettors discussion and figuring out winners!

wtaaddictcom, please take extra security precautions as they same bookies (in collaboration with hackers) may try to hack your website, as you are also trying to help bettors win at the cost of the bookies profits!

      • Yes i noticed that Tenngrand went down yesterday. I highly doubt that is what happened. But yes, I noted it and will try to take extra measures… The discussion can’t be stopped. Hacking a website will not stop it

  2. I think Petra Kavitova will win. She has got back her old form before the injury/attack. In fact kavitova is a new kavitova now having reduced her unforced error count besides making herself fitter than when she came back in 2017. If kavitova plays like she played against Mugs, she will definitely overpower Venus who loses to players with superior firepower (like Mugs, Kavitova etc.) like she lost to the superior firepower of Mugs in the 2017 Wimbledon Finals!

Venus being 37 yrs old also tires fast after playing 3 or 4 matches continuously. She is not young anymore. Venus may also be distracted with the birth of Serena’s child and would like to go home quicker…and Kavitova will help Venus do just that today!lol

    • Venus has beaten many players with superior firepower this year… Vandeweghe, Osaka, Ostapenko. Venus being 37 and tiring is not a factor, she has already made 2 Grand Slam finals this year and shown that’s not a problem. Venus is not distracted, she is desperate to win the tournament. If anyone will be tired it’s kvitova who has not played this many matches in a row for over a year..

      • wtaaddictcom, you are definitely right in what you said above. But Kavitova is a far bigger girl having more fire power ( than Vandeweghe, Osaka, Ostapenko) than other girls. Her Forehand and other weapons (power serve) are also firing now and is a danger to all. Besides kavitova is playing with high confidence motivated by her good form. When Kavitova is in a terminator mood, it is difficult for anyone to stop her!

We cannot ignore the 5-1 H2H advantage of Kavitova.

Another 2 important facts to note is that:-

        1) Kavitova won all her matches in 2 easy sets. Venus won 2 of the 4 matches in 3 sets with great difficulty!

        2) Kavitova came thru a tougher draw giving her more confidence. Venus had a far easier draw comparatively. Venus will be shell-shocked in the sudden step-up in competition from CSN to the Terminator Kavitova!

Over/3sets can hit here (as venus will fight tooth and nail before losing), which will be my No.1 bet. A small to medium bet on Kavitova.

        • Finally Venus is 37 years old. She cannot compete with a more powerful player who is 10 years younger (Kavitova). Can she?

All factors point towards a Kavitova win inclusive of the game stats.

          • Sorry but that makes no sense. She often beats players much younger than her and more powerful… Vandeweghe, Osaka and Ostapenko…

  3. Venus vs Petra have played each other 5 times and all those meetings ended in 3 sets.
Petra Kvitova is about to win the 2nd set and hopefully the match.

    V. Williams is one of my favourite player’s in WTA and she has defeated players much younger than she is, just in Wimbledon(2017) she defeated Qiang wang(1992), Elise Mertens(1995), Niaomi Osaka(1997), Ana Konjuh(1997), Jelena Ostapenko(1997), Johanna konta(1991) she is older than all this players by more than a decade but still playing FANTASTICO(i didn’t misspell) even thought she disappointed me in the Finals when she played Garbine Muguruza.

Having said that i picked Petra Kvitova to win, i also picked the over 21.5 games so no matter who wins am cool but i hope Petra wins.

I would love to see Venus Williams win a Slam b4 she retires but she lost Australian open & Wimbledon in the finals and i thought she would win Wimbledon cos it’s her favourite Slam.

Wtaaddict who did you pick to win Wimbledon? You are welcome!
You and your site deserves all the praise.
Should i address you as Wtaaddictcom or is there a particular name you would like me to call you?

Petra vs Venus just started a few minutes ago, you picked Venus williams, i picked Petra Kvitova, i hope we both get it right lol!
I am wishing us both good luck.

    Take care ok.

  4. There was an error in my comment, that comment ended with a question- who did you pick to win Wimbledon when Venus Williams played Garbine Muguruza?

I posted the other comment on a different article here i am sorry.

    • I believe I picked Wozniacki to win Wimbledon (Yikes) but I don’t really make outright predictions.. it’s just too tough.. unless Serena is around. It was a great win by Venus, a very close match, both played amazing, it could have gone either way.

  5. Well done Wtaaddict, you did well picking Venus in 3 sets.
You got the Winner and the set, you also predicted that K. Anderson would win WOW!

I thought Petra Kvitova will do the job in 3 sets so i picked her to win and i also went with the over games just to stay neutral.
Imo Sam Querrey was the better player because of the way he won his previous matches plus H2H but he lost to Anderson in 4.

Do you see K. Anderson reaching the finals or do you think P. Carreno will stop?
Anderson leads in the H2H 2-0 and he defeated Pablo in straight sets recently in Montreal(2017) he is also the better player on Hard court.

    K. Anderson on hard overall- 305/149.
    K. Anderson this year on hard court- 14/6.
    P. Carreno on hard court overall- 91/44.
Pablo Carreno on hard court this year- 14/7.

    P. Carreno plays better on clay court he has won 316 matches and lost 143 matches, this year(2017) Pablo has really improved on hard court he has defeated all his opponent in 3 sets wow 3 sets in this #USOPEN.

This match will definitely go over games and in my opinion it won’t end in 3 sets, i am not done researching this match and i might change my mind but if i were to pick a Winner i will go with K. Anderson to win & i also like the over games and over 3.5 sets(this is risky cos the match can go over games and not require a 4th or 5th set, the maximum games in 3 sets is 39 games).
I don’t always pick over games but when two good players are playing and i think it will require an extra set i can’t go with the under games.

I picked Petra to win and on a separate slip i went with over 21.5 games.
I also picked Sam to win but on a different slip i went with the over 42.5 games with other matches as well just to stay neutral.

If V. Williams makes it to another Grand Slam finals, i think she would win it even though i want K. Pliskova to win it.
How can she not win it, 2 Slams this year and she lost it, she needs to win a Slam b4 she retires cos if she doesn’t win this one it only gets harder 4rm here.

    Wtaaddict what do you think?
Sloane Stephens is a tough opponent and Stephens is leading in the H2H 1-0 but after Petra’s match i know Venus will prevail even if it takes 3 sets.

    • Thank you. It was a good win for Venus. It really could have gone either way. For most of the last set it looked like Petra would win but she just played a really poor tiebreak. I agree that if Venus makes the final, she will win it. Venus would be my pick from here, I think we all want to see Venus win another Grand Slam, she deserves it more than anyone. It has been a remarkable year for Venus and she deserves to top it off with a Grand Slam title, 3 runner-up finished would just be cruel.

      • Wtaaddict,

What i meant in my question is Who did you pick when Venus Williams was playing Garbine Muguruza in Wimbledon Final?

You are right V. Williams deserves to win another Grand Slam b4 she retires, she has been fantastic.
If she meets my Karolina Pliskova or Coco i will root 4 her( Venus) to win but she might disappoint again.

        What do you think?
        Can she show up?
My heart can’t take another disappoint lol!

One more thing, who is your favourite tennis player in WTA & ATP?
In WTA- Karolina Pliskova is my #1, i also like V. Williams, Maria Sharapova, Victoria Azarenka, Kristina Mladenovic, Petra Kvitova, Coco Vandeweghe, Kristyna Pliskova, J. Ostapenko etc as you can see the list is short! But my number is Karolina.

In ATP- i don’t have a number #1 yet but my top 3 is Roger Federer, Alexander Zverev, Novak Djokovic etc i like a lot of players in ATP- Juan Martin Del Potro, G. Dimitrov, G. Monfils, Tommy Paul, i also like R. Nadal but some Rafans are going to make me drop him in my list.

        What’s yours?

        • I believe i predicted Venus too win, :/

          my favourites:

Putintseva, Radwanska, Kerber, Halep, Svitolina, Pavlyuchenkova…

Goffin, Thiem, Carreno Busta, Ramos-Vinolas, Bautista Agut, Ferrer…
