Madrid R2: Victoria Azarenka vs Ajla Tomljanovic
One of Tuesday’s most intriguing second round matches at the Mutua Madrid Open sees 2012 finalist: Victoria Azarenka take on the talented, Ajla Tomljanovic. On paper this may appear to be one sided contest, however if Ajla can produce some of her best tennis, there will be very little to separate the pair on the Madrid clay.
Vika made an impressive start to her clay court season on Sunday, notching up a hard fought 6-3 7-5 victory over Venus Williams. Vika was too solid for the wayward American, hitting 22 winners to just 15 unforced errors in a promising first up performance. It’s important that Vika has a good couple of weeks, a top 16 seed at Roland Garros is not out of the equation.
Ajla Tomljanovic progressed to the second round in Madrid courtesy of a 6-4 6-3 victory over Belinda Bencic, arguably the 21-year-old’s best victory of the year. Ever since reaching the final in Pattaya City, Tomljanovic has suffered four first round losses and has looked highly deprived of confidence on court.
This will be the first career meeting between Vika and Ajla and it promises to be a fascinating encounter between two fiery opponents. Ajla’s best results have come on clay whilst clay is arguably Vika’s least prefered surface. The Croatian has nothing to lose on Tuesday and a whole lot to gain, If Ajla plays to her potential, she can push Vika, however the experienced Belarusian should ultimately prevail.
Prediction: Victoria Azarenka to defeat Ajla Tomljanovic in 3 sets
