(wc) Victoria Azarenka vs (3) Caroline Wozniacki
Victoria Azarenka’s 12 match winning streak at the Qatar Total Open will come under threat on Thursday when she takes on Caroline Wozniacki in the second quarter-final of the day.
Vika has overcome two tough opponents to reach the quarter-final stage, great preparation for what promises to be a hard fought match against Caroline Wozniacki. Vika thumped Angelique Kerber 6-0 6-3 in the opening round before advancing to the quarter-finals with a 6-3 6-7 6-1 victory over Elina Svitolina.
In a high quality match full of long and gruelling rallies, Vika ultimately outlasted her younger opponent. Vika had chances to close out the match in straight sets but became a little tentative towards the end of the set and made some lazy errors. In the third set Vika completely turned things around, playing an extremely clean set of tennis to cruise to victory. After a horrible, injury-interrupted 2014, Vika seems to be back on the right track, ready for a massive climb up the rankings.
Caroline Wozniacki did well to reach the semi-finals last week in Dubai despite suffering from a virus. Wozniacki defeated Sam Stosur, Alize Cornet and Flavia Pennetta before falling to the eventual champion: SImona Halep. The Dane is feeling much better this week and already finds herself in the final 8.
Caroline Wozniacki hasn’t had to do much to reach the quarter-final stage in Doha. The Dane received a bye through to the second round before defeating Alexandra Dulgheru 6-1 6-0 as the Romanian was forced to retire with an injury. It’s not the greatest preparation for Wozniacki given how well Azarenka is playing at the moment.
Victoria Azarenka holds a 4-3 head to head record over Wozniacki. The two met in the second round at the Australian Open this year, Azarenka producing a stunning performance to win 6-4 6-2. Wozniacki didn’t do much wrong, Azarenka was simply too good, coming up with some breathtaking winners at the end of long rallies.
Vika’s first two performances this week in Doha have been impressive, her 12 match winning streak in Doha is also quite impressive. Vika clearly enjoys the conditions and is able to produce some of her best tennis under the lights at the Qatar Total Open. I don’t think Caroline is well prepared for this given she hasn’t played a competitive match this week in Doha. Furthermore Vika has the edge has the edge in this match up, she does most things better than Wozniacki.
Prediction: Vika Azarenka to defeat Caroline Wozniacki in 2 sets
