Victoria Azarenka vs Casey Dellacqua, Rome R1 Preview

Rome R1: Victoria Azarenka vs Casey Dellacqua

Victoria Azarenka will begin her 2015 Internazionali BNL D’Italia campaign with a first round matchup against Australian, Casey Dellacqua. Vika continues to improve in 2015, the Belarusian looks to be ready to compete for the biggest titles.

Vika arrives in Rome on the back of a heartbreaking loss to Serena Williams in the third round in Madrid. Vika fought from a set down to serve for the match at 6-5 in the third set. Vika had three match points at 40-0 but failed to convert, serving three double faults in a row to send the match into a tiebreaker. The tiebreak was a formality for Williams as Azarenka lost all confidence.

Despite the loss, it was a very promising week for Vika. The Belarusian picked up straight set victories over Venus Williams and Ajla Tomljanovic and can take a lot of confidence from her impressive performance against Serena in the third round. Vika served particularly well in Madrid, she seems to have really worked on that area of the game. This improvement could take Vika to a whole new level.

Casey Dellacqua has made a very disappointing start to the year, picking up just 4 victories whilst succumbing to 4 first round losses. Casey did pick up her best win of the year last week in Madrid, defeating Schiavone in straight sets before succumbing to Aga Radwanska in straight sets. The Australian went on to win the doubles title in Madrid alongside Yaroslava Shvedova, which should give her confidence heading into Rome.

Victoria Azarenka has an absolutely dominant head to head record over Dellacqua. Vika has won all 4 of their previous encounter, each in straight sets. Casey has managed to pick up 3 or more games in just 1 of the 8 sets. The last meeting was in Brisbane last year, Azarenka prevailed 6-3 6-1.

This should be another comfortable victory for Azarenka, Dellacqua doesn’t have any weapons to trouble Azarenka and will struggle to compete with the Belarusian.

Prediction: Victoria Azarenka to defeat Casey Dellacqua in 2 sets
