(wc) Victoria Azarenka vs Elina Svitolina
Vika will continue her quest for a third Qatar Total Open title when she takes on fiery youngster, Elina Svitolina in the second round on Wednesday night. The two time former champion made a devastating start to her 2015 Doha campaign and looks like being one of the players to beat this week. Elina Svitolina will be up for the challenge, the fiery young Ukrainian seems to thrive on the big stage against quality opponents.
Vika began the week with a commanding 6-0 6-3 victory over Angelique Kerber. In what was supposed to be a close encounter between two ladies desperate for a victory, Vika dominated from start to finish in what was one of her best performances since returning to the tour from a long-term injury. Vika seems to really enjoy the conditions under the lights in Doha, she is now unbeaten in 11 matches since 2012 at the Qatar Total Open.
Vika played an incredibly clean opening set against Angie. The Belarusian hit 11 winners to just 6 unforced errors, had a first serve percentage of 90% and won converted all three break points chances she was presented with. Angie fought back in the second set but Vika was up to the task, winning the crucial seventh game before running away with the match. Vika will look to build on her impressive first up victory in Doha with another strong performance on Wednesday evening against a potentially dangerous young opponent.
Elina Svitolina advanced to the second round in Doha with an extremely hard fought victory over talented youngster Daria Gavrilova. Svitolina eventually prevailing 6-4 5-7 6-4 in just over two and a half hours. Just one break of serve separated the pair in an extremely tight final set. Svitolina is making a good habit of winning close matches this season.
Elina will not be intimidated by Vika. The youngster has already taken on the worlds best this season and has done herself proud. Elina has taken a set off Serena and Petra but will be hoping to turn strong performances against top players into victories.
This will be the first career meeting between Vika and Elina. These two have similar on court personalities, two fierce competitors that will fight for every single point. Just like Vika, Elina is an all court player. Elina is extremely solid from the baseline and has excellent retrieving skills. The Ukrainian is also very capable of stepping into the court and being aggressive when the opportunity presents itself.
However, It’s hard to pick against Vika in this match especially after her commanding first up performance. Vika is just a little better at most things and has much more experience. This should be a close match but Vika should ultimately prevail.
Prediction: Victoria Azarenka to defeat Elina Svitolina in 2 sets
