Wuhan R2: Victoria Azarenka vs (Q) Johanna Konta
Victoria Azarenka and Johanna will go head-to-head for the very first time when they meet in the second round at the Wuhan Open. This is a potential danger match for Victoria Azarenka, Konta enters this match with momentum on her side, having won 19 of her last 20 matches.
In her first appearance since her quarter-final showing at the U.S Open, Victoria Azarenka got off to a positive shaky in Wuhan. The Belarussian advanced to the second round courtesy of a 6-2 7-6 victory over Lauren Davis. Azarenka started the match off really well but seemed to be troubled by a leg injury in the second set, the Belarussian admitted she was in pain after the match.
Johanna Konta is in the form of her life, the Brit has won 19 of her last 20 matches including two ITF titles. Konta came through qualifying at the U.S Open to reach the fourth round, recording upset victories over Andrea Petkovic and Garbine Mugruza before succumbing to Petra Kvitova. Konta has continued her solid form in Wuhan, coming through the qualifying draw before beating Andrea Petkovic in the first round, The Brit has won all three matches in straight sets. Konta will enter her match against Azarenka full of confidence and will play with the freedom of knowing that she has nothing to lose in a match that no one really expects her to win.
This should be a reasonably close match, Konta is in some really good form and her powerful game is suited to the quicker conditions in Wuhan. However, I don’t think she has the quality to beat an opponent of Azarenka’s calibre. The Belarussian doesn’t mind playing powerful opponents and will have too much variety and expertise for the Brit.
